A Shaved Mint | Milan | 2007 | 16m 13s
video composition | color | sound

A Shaved Mint is the anagram of the movie title “Nevada Smith”. Henry Hathaway’s 1966 western starring Steve McQueen was completely re-edited and made into a 16′ panning collage that still includes every single frame of the original film. The original 992 cuts have been separated, time stretched to play in extreme slow motion, and fitted into the composition. The result is a slow scrolling mosaic that clearly presents the original 72 scenes with their individual color palette and tension, maintaining the readability of the story, but also offering a wider view of the narrative and chromatic structure of the movie.

Claudio Sinatti (Milan, 1972) is an Italian director and multimedia artist, focusing on live media performance, spatial video systems and sound visualization. He approached film and video in the early 90s and directed his first music promo in 1996 for Italian band Casino Royale, winning Best Italian Video Award at the PIM Awards. For the following years he continued directing music promos between Milan and New York for bands such as Eiffel 65, Sarah Jane Morris, 99 Posse, Neffa, Carmen Consoli, Articolo 31, Alex Britti, Alexia, Africa Unite. In between productions he starts experimenting with film and video projections until, back in Milan in 1999, he founded the video collective Sun Wu-Kung with the main interest of exploring live manipulation of sounds and images. Since then he has continuously explored the limits of real time audio/video performance in a prolific series of personal and collective projects such as Symbiosis Orchestra, Pirandelo, Live Video Ensemble, Carillon, Rhomboide. His love for music has brought him through the years to involve many musicians in his work such as Christian Fennesz, Stephan Mathieu, Scanner, Teho Teardo, AGF, Vladislav Delay, among others. In recent years his work has focused on installation projects and performances, for personal research and commercial purposes, moving between art festivals, brand events, pop concerts, television, fashion, cinema, and theatre.
