PIET-JAN VAN ROSSUM

Piet-Jan van Rossum (Delft, The Netherlands) studied composition at the Royal conservatory in Den Haag with a.o. Louis Andriessen.

Van Rossum above all directs his attention to composing and writing. In his own words: “I look upon myself as a storyteller, as a member of an ancient tribe of shy, wild people who, through stories, sometimes succeed to create another way of experiencing time. My work comprises life as i live it: a piece of wood full of splinters, chunks of beauty and the fracturing or lack of it: lots of waiting, silences. This explains my fascination with scratched movies, lazy eyes, a broken voice, old gramophone-records. It’s all about looking for a novel beauty in the corrosion of an old (sound)world.” His music is in between genres: avant-garde, pop, classical, minimal, electronic.

Next to composing he is chairman of composers-guild C96, was composer in residence at several festivals and has a music-theatre company, ‘Zoogdier’. Petra van der Schoot (director) and van Rossum made 2 music theatre performance “notes of a mammal” in 2008 and ‘achterna gedragen’ in 2011.

His works have been played by, a.o.: het Radio Symfonie Orkest, het Nederlands Ballet Orkest, het Maarten Altena Ensemble (MAE), David Kweksilber Bigband, ensemble Alpha Tokyo, Lunapark, ASKO/Schönberg ensemble and the Ives ensemble.
